Honeydew, the biggest and brawniest of the Whisper Kids, has the most instinctive survival abilities. Being a country bear with backwoods common sense, she is a natural tracker, and a good reader of the wind and sky. Because she is close to the Earth, Honeydew has heard the Whispers well. When the Whispers inspire her, she becomes a fierce bear of enormous strength and courage and jumps into a special whistle song.
Honeydew is the most musical of the Whisper Kids. She practices whistling when she wakes up every morning. She whistles songs and imitates the sounds of the birds in the gardens. Her motto is “A whistling bear is a happy bear.”
She comes from a family of gregarious Southerners, and she believes in hospitality and neighborliness. Her Southern drawl is as smooth and slow as honey. Her easy attitude might be mistaken for laziness. Really, she just likes the good life. When she isn’t eating, she’s planning her next meal. Honey is her favorite food, and at home she is followed by a swarm of pet bees.
Honeydew is aggressive and fearless when it comes to protecting her friends, especially Moonflower whom she respects and admires. Honeydew is fiercely loyal to Moonflower and quick to take her side in any argument. In many ways Honeydew wishes she were more like Moonflower. Honeydew tries hard to be feminine and dainty, but she can’t help being more of a tomboy. She is afraid to show much of her feminine side to the boys for fear of being ridiculed. The fact that the boys treat her like one of the boys doesn’t help. Her warm and cuddly side may be revealed now and again when her motherly instincts kick in. Honeydew is on the cusp of puberty, and is self conscious about her size and her changing body. She grows out of her clothes faster than her mother can make them.
On adventures she takes her duffle bag which is nearly as tall as herself. Honeydew keeps many changes of clothing, quilts, a pot of honey, perfume, candles, plates, cups, bowls, forks, spoons, knives, napkins, dried flowers, and dried food. Honeydew also never leaves home without her flowered-fanny pack filled with her make-up, red nail polish, and lipstick.
Honeydew tries to be dainty, but she can’t help being more of a tomboy. She's afraid to show her girl side to the boys for fear of being bullied.
Her easy attitude might be mistaken for laziness. Really, she just likes the good life. When she isn’t eating, she’s planning her next meal.
