Hops is a good-natured, All-American kid. His is loyal, kind, and true— like the boy scout who helps old ladies cross the street, like the Iowa farm boy who drinks lemonade while sitting on the porch swing with his girlfriend on a summer evening.
There’s nothing guarded about his personality. Hops wears his heart on his sleeve, as his emotions are literally displayed by his animated bunny ears which change colors with his mood. He can go from sad to maniacally happy in an instant. At times, he can be shy and introverted, mainly because of his embarrassment over his colorful ears. His ears, however, are a powerful tool. They can pick up sounds no one else can hear.
Hops’ pleasures are as simple as a game of catch. He may not be the brightest of the group, but then again, he doesn’t have to be. He works hard, plays hard, and is always a good friend. He wouldn’t know how to tell a lie if he had to. Hops looks up to Licorice and wishes he could be more like him. He wishes he could be more aggressive and charismatic, but in his heart Hops is a follower. He is more athletic than Licorice, but Hops’ lack of confidence keeps him from being as adventurous as his friend. With a little encouragement, his energy and commitment makes him a great asset to the Whisper Kids.
Hops believes in curses, bad luck, and omens. He’ll wear a garland of garlic to ward off evil. He’ll jump over a crack not to break his mother’s back. When it comes to the mythology of the Gardens, Hops is a true believer. He knew all about the Shadow Fairies and the Monk Hawk Fairies before he ever saw one. He believes in the Whispers so strongly that he doesn’t even know them when he hears them. He doesn’t realize that his sensitivity and keen hearing are a part of his Whisper Power.

Nature is ruled by magic. And we all possess magical powers that we may discover— if we just learn how to listen to “the Whispers.”
